Description

Adeline Black cannot have magic. Magic is frivolous and dangerous and outlawed. And yet, when she finds her feet unexpectedly leaving the pantry floor, there’s no denying that something magical is happening. Banished by her grandmother to live with her family in Clamory, where magic is everything, Adeline must learn to control and hide her power in order to go home. At least, that’s the plan, before the Council realises she has rare magic.

Rare magic that could help heal the crystal caves of Clamory, the source of the power. Helped by her cousins, new friends and a catafly called Liquorice, Adeline must find her purpose in a dying magical world. But how can she do that when she doesn’t know who to trust?

Review

Adeline Black lives with her grandparents in Camellia, a place where all magic is outlawed, after her parents died in an accident. Adeline’s grandmother is very strict and expects Adeline to be perfect at everything. So when she starts experiencing strange happenings like floating on the ceiling and white stripes appearing in her hair she has no idea what to do except hide it from her grandmother...

But her grandfather, who loves Adeline deeply, knows just what to do. It turns out that Adeline can do magic because her mum could do magic - but no one wanted her to know about it. Adeline is quickly sent to live with her mother’s family in Clamory so she can learn to control the magic and stop floating on the ceiling unexpectedly!

Meeting a new family that she didn’t know existed is a bit daunting but Adeline loves learning about magic. She is sent to school with her cousins to be assessed to see what type of magic she has, and she discovers that she has not one but two types of rare magic, and that Clamory desperately needs her help...

The source of Clamory’s magic is in crystals deep in the caves below, and the crystals are unstable. Will Adeline be able to heal the crystals? She really wants to help, but she just doesn’t know who she can trust anymore.

This is a fantastic story of magic, family and friends. It’s about finding out who you are and where you really belong. Adeline is a great character and I loved the magical house she lives in where rooms can just appear when you need them (I would love one of these!) and her flying kitten, Liquorice. It’s a wonderful story full of fun and excitement and I’m really hoping that there is a sequel in the wings. Perfect for ages 11 and up.
