Nick’s life revolves around his family farm, homeschooling and campdrafting events. It has always seemed like enough, but now Nick’s not so sure.
His sister has no trouble making friends wherever she goes, but Nick has always held back. Is it too late to start getting a social group of his own?
After joining his sister at the local swim squad, Nick discovers his competitive drive. Will he find someone to connect with too? Will his newfound confidence help him at the next campdraft?
Nick is fifteen and homeschooled, and he finds socialising really uncomfortable. Nick and his little sister, Kathy, compete in campdrafting - but Kathy is much better than he is, and she has no trouble making friends.
Nick decides to join the local swimming club, and much to his surprise he is really good at breaststroke. This gives him the confidence to relax slightly, and join in with the others his age. He soon makes friends with Tony, who also lives on a farm, as well as JJ and two of the girls. When his new friends ask about campdrafting, he tells them when the next event is and they all decide to come and support him. But will Nick be able to ride with them all watching him, or will it all be too much?
This is a great story about pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone. Nick is perfectly happy on his own, but he often thinks having a friend would be good. Joining the swimming club gives him a chance to be himself and let people get close to him. A wonderful book about family and the importance of friendships, that is sure to be enjoyed by all aged 14 and up.
