Eleven-year-old Roswell – yes, named after earth’s greatest extraterrestrial experience – Johnson has an obsession for all things otherworldly.
No one believes in Roswell’s theories but he is determined to find out more, and maybe uncover what really made his Dad disappear years ago. Living on his grandparents’ chicken farm, he goes out one night to find out what the commotion is about when he is accidently abducted by a crew of investigative aliens.
They don’t realise that he was teleported to their spaceship with the chicken that they wished to study until they are too far from earth to return him. When their ship is taken prisoner by a group of evil aliens, intent on taking over the earth, he is introduced to their other prisoners. This unlikely group has the future of planet earth and world peace now resting on their shoulders. Can they succeed before it is too late?
This is a terrific middle grade reader, filled with humour, an evil billionaire, an eclectic group of intergalactic beings and the need to save the world, one step at a time. Chris Colfer certainly writes an engrossing story full of entertainment, but always with a touch of humanity. Themes of working together, caring for the environment, and being understanding of other’s differences shine through in this novel that will best suit readers aged 10 to 14.
