This is the second book in this series of stand-alone mysteries by Carla Salmon (following on from We Saw What You Started), and it is is an action-packed adventure story from start to end, told from the alternating perspectives of Alex and Luna.
A group of friends at a surf lifesaving camp on an island, staying in the rec centre, sounds like a fun way to spend a week! But some of them are more excited than others...
Luna and Milly are best friends, but they view the world differently. Milly, the driven and high achieving lifesaving captain, is more than happy with the arrangement. Her best friend Luna, who is only there at Milly’s insistence, is not so sure. And now that their plans have changed and camping is on the agenda for the first night, Luna is not happy at all.
The boys - Alex, Otto and Milly’s twin brother Jasper - are thrilled that they will be allowed to camp away from the others, on the beach. But when they discover a fortune gold, and Alex makes the snap decision to take it, they find themselves being chased by guys with guns.
With the groups now separated, they are going to have to come up with ideas quickly to try and find and save each other. But figuring out who are the good guys and who are the bad guys is getting more complicated with each interaction they have with those that they come across - particularly Sasha, a girl who lives on the island. She says she can help them, but her story doesn’t really add up. Can they trust her, or will she lead them straight into more trouble?
With great characters and surprises all round, this is a fantastic, fast-paced novel about friendship, the consequences of decisions, life lessons and family mysteries, all with a hint of romance thrown in too. It is a story that will be enjoyed by all teenagers.
