Ash isn’t the biggest giant living in Haven-Home. He’s not even as big as his twin brother, Oak,who’s on the path to taking over from their father as village chief one day. Unlike the warriors in his family, Ash wants to learn incantation: the magic of wood, stone, water and fire.
Now that they’re twelve, Ash and Oak must go on a dangerous trek to prove themselves giant warriors, and they must each bring back something with which to defend Haven-Home from the prowling wolves that threaten all who live there.
Will Ash’s quest for incantation serve him well on the trek? Or will it bring even greater danger to Haven-Home?
A Giant’s Trek is a vividly imagined adventure about courage and following your true path.
Ash and Oak are twin giants, but they are nothing alike. Oak is big, strong and good at using his axe and spear. Ash is small, and not very good with either his axe or spear.
As they have both turned twelve, they must undertake a trek with an adult mentor outside thesafety of the village to prove they are now grown up.
Ash is dreading this day as he doesn’t want to be a warrior - he wants to learn about incantation and magic from stone, wood, fire and water. And when he draws Avalanche as his mentor he thinks that things could not get any worse for him. Avalanche is a reclusive giant who doesn’t even live in the village and Ash doesn’t really know him at all. How is Avalanche going to help him on his trek?
What follows is a rollicking adventure through the wilderness as Avalanche helps Ash discover more about himself.
A fantastic fantasy adventure that will keep you enthralled. Ash and Avalanche are great characters and although they are giants they may soon learn that size is not as important as Ash thinks, and that strength is not just found in size but in the courage needed to face your fears. A wonderful coming of age story that readers in lower secondary will particularly enjoy.
