Review

Harriet Hound is an 8-year-old who loves animals, particularly dogs, and all things to do with nature. Her family own Hounds Rescue, where they look after and rehome abandoned dogs, so there are always plenty of dogs for Harriet to love.

But Harriet also has a secret! She has superhero powers that were given to her by her Nana that allow her to summon just the right dog for the issue at hand. In the three short stories, we see Harriet try to solve the mystery of the vanishing vegetables, try to save her class from a sudden storm, and trying to save the winter carnival from catastrophe!

These are delightful stories for younger readers. Harriet is autistic, and although the book shows some of the challenges Harriet faces, the stories really highlight how Harriet and her supportive family use different strategies so that Harriet can not just cope, but thrive!

Harriet is a delightful and thoughtful character, and with highly descriptive writing, this will appeal to those in junior primary years.
