When Blaze was born a storm was unleashed that almost drowned the whole world, and the world has been terrified of her ever since. She was born into a fire-wielding family but she is a Rain Singer, a water wielder - and there has not been one of those for generations.
She has been kept safe and protected from the world in her grandmother’s family home with her twin brother, Flint, and younger brother, Renly. Just after their seventeenth birthday, Blaze and Flint are selected to compete in the Choosing Rite, the fearsome trials that will decide who the next rulers of the empire will be.
Blaze can’t hide any more, and intrigue follows her every step. Can she trust anyone except Flint? She seems to have attracted the interest of the Crown Prince and his half brother - and both are dangerous. Blaze is struggling to learn more about her power and how to control it, and the never-ending training and partying is pushing her to the limits. If she wants the crown she will have to believe in herself, and find the courage to show how strong she really is.
This is an addictive fantasy story full of so many twists and turns. It has dangerous trials, lots of elemental magic, adventure, sparkling romance and top it all off with the intrigue of court politics, and this book will have you hooked from the first page. The characters are wonderful, as is the love Blaze has for her family, especially her little brother, Renly. Blaze goes through so many emotions as she tries to find the courage that she needs to face this strange new world she finds herself in.
This book will be a surefire hit with fantasy lovers aged 15 and up and they, like me, will be eagerly awaiting Book 2.
