Review

This is a wonderful timeslip novel from brilliant Australian author, Anna Ciddor, that gives us a look at life in 1969 at the time of the moon landing.

Letty has been left with her Nan during the holidays, while her parents are off working. She used to love going there, but that was before Grampa got dementia. Now they go to visit him everyday in that smelly old people’s home, and Letty can think of nothing worse.

Then she discovers Grampa’s old treasure box from when he was a boy. When she puts on his old St Kilda football jumper, she is immediately transported back in time to when Grampa was eleven - the same age that Letty is now. His name was Keith, but because of his fascination with space and the impending moon landing everyone called him Moonboy. Letty constantly travels back and forth in time to the time of the moon landing - and even changes a few things along the way. Will her time travel cause a disaster?

This is close up of what life was like in 1969 and the huge changes that have occurred since then, especially in technology, but also to things like behaviour, family life and schooling that will make the kids of today think. The story also handles Grampa’s dementia and how Letty, now Charlotte, brings a spark back into Grampa’s life when she shares his memories and special treasure box items. This is awonderful read, with a historical setting and themes that will open discussions on many topics, this is a great book for readers aged 9 to 12 years.
