A celebration of community, adventure, kindness and, above all, dogs!
The summer holidays have finally arrived and Scout can’t wait for her adventure in the big rig with Dad. They’re on a mission to deliver donations of dog food to animal rescue shelters right across the state.
There’ll be lots of music, dad-jokes and a brilliant plan that will make sure everyone’s got a friend for the holidays. There might even be a special four-legged friend in it for Scout.
But Scout and her dad get more than they’ve bargained for. It’s bushfire season – and it’s not just the dogs who need rescuing . . .
Scout is looking forward to the summer holidays, especially as she gets to go with her Dad in his Big Rig as he delivers pet food donations to animal rescue centres. Scout’s mum died a few months earlier, and Scout really misses her. She is finding adjusting to boarding school a bit difficult too, so this is an exciting trip before going home for Christmas.
As they drive around the country, Scout and her Dad meet lots of adorable dogs and other pets, and Scout thinks she can help them find a home. With the help of her new friend from school, Anika, they set up a website to match truck drivers to dogs in order to help the dogs find homes, and give the drivers company on their long trips. Scout would also love a dog of her own, but how can this work if she at boarding school and her dad is on the road?
It is also bushfire season, and when they return home the fires are burning and getting closer to them. Scout is worried about all the people she met on her road trip. Will everyone be ok?
This is a wonderful book about family, friends and rallying around each other in times of need. Scout and her Dad are wonderful characters, and their relationship is lovely as they both deal with the loss of her mum, and learn that memories are special reminders of the great times you shared. It also has lots of wonderful stories of animals finding new homes as well as the dangers faced by everyone when bushfires rage across the land.
This is a story that will be loved by those in upper primary and above, especially those that enjoy animal stories.
