Description

From master story teller Kate DiCamillo comes an original fairy tale, enchantingly illustrated, in which five puppets confront circumstances beyond their control with patience, cunning and high spirits.

Once, there was a king. And a wolf. And a girl with a shepherd’s crook. And a boy with abow and arrow. And also, there was an owl... They were puppets, and they were waiting for a story to begin.

In this new work of short fiction by twice winner of the Newbery Medal Kate DiCamillo, exquisitely illustrated in black and white by Governor General Literary Award Finalist Julie Morstad, five puppets who find themselves together in an abandoned trunk are carried offinto the adventure of a lifetime.

Review

Five puppets finally get to leave their shelf in the store when the old sailor buys them. Wesee their journey only by what they can see through their eyes - and this opens up to a whole new world when they leave the store.

The puppets each have dreams, and hope to have marvelous adventures of their own. But when they are separated they realise that their story may be greatest when it is shared with others.

At times they are unloved and discarded, but they are thrilled when they are finally able to become an important story when their new owners use them in a moving play, the highlight of their journey so far. But this is not where their story ends, as we are left sure that the puppets will see many more adventures!

This is a brilliant, thought provoking fairy tale, with themes of belonging and shared experiences, that is ideal for readers as young as 7 and as old as old can be.
